2010-2011 Morning Beats Week 32 Thursday

Thursday…time to do it live!

This song goes out to all of my dustup haters out there, prepare toenjoy what you hate. I came across this track when a friend posteda video (of which today’s track is a literal rip). The video features theBerlin duo known as elle p & iftah performing a song live in what seemslike a bathroom or similar small space. elle p for her part sings and playsa child’s toy called a pixiphoneiftah uses a monome 40h which isan interface device for computers. Using these simple instrumentsthey make an awesome tune. Have a listen. D.I.Y. at it’s best.

November Sky [Single Version] / The ILLZ / :03 From Gold

2010-2011 Morning Beats Week 31 Wednesday

I’m not sure how I came across this cat. I think it was through checking out another MC. Anyway, when I first heard one of his tracks I thought to myself, “I’ve been waiting for years for someone in rap to produce music like this…finally!”

This artist goes by The ILLZ and he’s a young cat from New Jerseywith a nice vision for the potential of hip-hop music. Starting out wantingto be a traditional rapper making traditional rap music, a few setbackschanged his perspective on the genre. He had to leave filmschool whenhe could no longer afford it, then lost his father in a car accident and aclose friend to a shooting. It was around this time that he became boredwith the very music he was trying to make. He saw hip-hop music asa sea of imitators, repetitive music with nothing to say, or saying thesame things in ways that had been done before. His break came whenhe started exploring other music, becoming particularly taken by thework of Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead amongst others.

He began expanding his horizons and you can feel it in the music he makes. The ILLZ has been noted for incorporating several styles from progressiverock to trip-hop to dubstep. That being said, his music can be a little allover the place but it’s always original. And while he’s not a wordsmith likeCannibus or Nas, he’s a sincere MC with a solid flow and great musical production. Check out today’s track and enjoy the chillaxivity of it. It goes distance runner style hitting a nice stride around 2:35. Bon appetite!

Back In The Game / Jamie T / Panic Prevention

2010-2011 Morning Beats Week 31 Tuesday

Today we have a treat. The wonderful track Back In The Game from none other than that creative vicenarian known simply as Jamie T. Originally off of his Betty and Selfish Sons EP - which by the way is selling for about 75 British Pounds in CD or Vinyl ONLY - today’s version is off of his debut album Panic Prevention.

The track help capitulate him to the forefront of the Brit music scene at the tender age of 19, earning him a best solo artist win from the 2007 Shockwave NME Awards - knocking off Thom Yorke and Jarvis Cocker. Anyway, whatevs. The track is dope. A bit acoustic-E, part screamy-emo, partly inaudible, but always enjoyable. Plus who doesn’t like accents? Oh, and I love the lyrics and especially the cadence (aka flow in hip-hop speak) with which he delivers his lyrics. Try and follow along…

Enjoy!

Take your brother down to the sea,
Have a two’s on a cigarette.
Young sons mozy it happily
Learn facts on the soviet
A crowded room that fits just three,
takes four do you connect?
All this shit means fuck all to me,
Long livers in the subsect.

So crazy Billy Jay Jones, he robs banks just for the shits
Man alone giggling so stoned,
pick up the phone
‘Cause that money I lent you said was just a loan
You’re danger prone,
with too much gel and a whiff of dad’s cologne
Leave me alone,
‘Cause now you come down and you just go and lower the tone

And after about ten damn minutes, he was back in the game.
Thought he was done man, thought he was finished,
But he’s back up again
And after about ten damn minutes, he was back in the game.
Thought he was done man, thought he was finished,
But he’s back up again.

A tainted brain of intoxication purple heart smart ass
Got on the transistor, said that you missed her,
Looking for selectors and found no one better than you.
With bother boy blues,
Pick up the old
tick up the avenues.
And talk like you do what you do,
Kicking up time.
‘Cause now you come down and it’s for who the bell tolls

And after about ten damn minutes, he was back in the game.
Thought he was done man, thought he was finished,
But he’s back up again
And after about ten damn minutes, he was back in the game.
Thought he was done man, thought he was finished,
But he’s back up again.

Happy Tuesday,

Wow! Wow! Wow! I know Kanye jumping on stage at the VMAs was totally inappropriate and rude, but if he cuts off Taylor Swift Britney Spears for this one I’ll stand behind him 100%.

35 minutes of pure genius (minus the suspect acting)

Thanks Kanye for pushing the envelope. I am once again inspired.
